Upgradable Hardware — the start of a new trend?

Post by mikehalloran »

How many threads are there talking about how perfectly good equipment has been made obsolete by ... well, everything from the latest OS to apps and firmware that can't be upgraded? Hundreds?

Is this an anomaly or a trend?

Metric Halo interfaces have been "future proof" for close to 20 years. Always field-upgradable.

Would be nice. I'm not surprised that a company like MacIntosh would do this, but I don't see much of a trend. Various approaches to hardware upgrades with software changes have been around for a while. I had some stuff where you were supposed to send in your EPROMS to be zapped but that didn't catch on.

I've got an RME that still runs 15 years later, Metric Halo are the other gold standard of reliability.
The upgrade kits for 20 year old gear is a fantastic thing.
