If you're curious about RAM usage, fire up activity monitor. You can sort processes by real memory use, and check overall memory with the "system memory" tab.

I would expect most of 16gb would go to waste if each app can only use 3 or 4, but I'm curious to find out...

"recovered files" in trash

Every time I start my computer up I find a folder named "recovered files" in the trash. I never recognize these files as things I have deleted or haven't deleted. A lot of them are absynth preset banks that won't open if I take them out of the trash, but I haven't lost any of the absynth b...

I hear a similar noise on my G4 powerbook (noise when mouse moved, typing, etc.) and can get rid of it by disabling "nap" for the processor. To do this install the CHUD tools (part of Xcode) off the OSX disk and then use the processor pane in system preferences. I hope this works for you.

I disagree. You definitely lose a lot going to mp3 but quality can be extremely variable. A higher bitrate mp3 (256kbps and up) made with a quality encoder can sound pretty good, even close to transparent on the average consumer sound system. LAME is known for creating a good quality file at a given...

I'll second gameu on this. If you enable "mix 1 includes computer output" then set audition to record "mix1 return" or somesuch you should get your output recorded. Also by setting s/pdif as output, then connecting s/pdif out to s/pdif in you can record your output via s/pdif in....

I was told by someone working on a thesis in distributed computing that gigabit actually has higher latency than 100Mbit. This is because gigabit uses larger buffers and packets. I think this also meant that 10Mbit had lower latency than 100MBit. Of course, if you need more bandwidth, than you do ne...

If you're concerned, see if you have trouble registering it. If it's already registered, contact MOTU and see what they say.

I would second what eixb has to say.

0db on the motu is unity gain; I think that when you turn it down all it does is digitally reduce the gain rather than turn down an analog amp. Not totally sure about this though. As for your main question I personally would deal with volume with the monitors or the knob on the 828 and not in the DA...

Can you see it in disk utility? If so, try deleting any partitions on it and recreating them. If not, you might be screwed.

You could try asking motu for a new disc. Might work, if you registered your hardware. They'd probably charge you but less than buying something new.

In the meantime you could try Audacity (http://audacity.sourceforge.net/) if all you're in a pinch.

If you are view pitch data (as in pitch correction) you can select it then copy and paste to a MIDI track. The one time I did this it didn't work very well, but your mileage may vary.

Assuming you can set the optical i/o on the 896 to toslink format instead of adat, you can get an optical miniplug-toslink cable and connect the two that way. You'll only get 2 channels though.

The audiophile doesn't have any sort of internal mixer that would allow it to run standalone and route inputs to outputs. So it won't do anything while your computer is off. If you can't get an app such as iTunes to play through it check your audio/MIDI setup and make sure the audiophile is set as t...

Even after doing what jarok suggests, if someone stole your computer then they would be able to pull your hard drive and access your files. Filevault would prevent them from doing this unless they figured out your password. Unless you have sensitive data which you really need to take on tour it prob...

You could try to find a serial card that would fit in your G4. Otherwise I think you are out of luck.

ADAT/lightpipe on the 2408 ought to work fine with other things.
