Re: Well???? is it worth buying? and were is best price in t

I bought it for the historic instruments; that's why I find all this comaprison to $3000 string libraries rather academic and irrelevant. Even at $500, the current discount on "Gold" is twice the price of MSI. Unless "Gold" is good enough to make a difference in getting taken ser...

Re: iHate iLok

To maintiger: that was exactly the point I was trying to make earlier. I deleted my posts though as I couldn't find a way to communicate this concept to the untraveled in a way that either gets through successfully or is non-offensive to modern PC sensibilities. I think you did a pretty good job of ...

Re: iHate iLok

I just remembered another rationale I've heard people use for justifying their piracy, which is transference. That is, these people reason that since Microsoft is swimming in cash and is viewed by many people to be monopolistic, that this somehow transfers to the entire software industry and that th...

Re: A/D Converters: 828 VS. 828mkII VS. 896HD

In my experience, the 828 mk II A/D converters are much cleaner than the 896 mk I converters, but maybe you're referring to the 896 mk II. I've been told by those who say they've used measurement tools that 828 mk II is slightly better than 896 mk II for A/D, as more of the money is on the additiona...

Re: DP vs Nuendo

Kwiz says Nuendo sounds better; Timeline says DP sounds better. Timeline's response seems to be intended as reinforcement of what Kwiz said. I'm definitely still confused!

Re: iHate iLok

Shooshie, that's an eye-opener. Not sure I agree with the discount plan, as the software companies need to make money afterall. I often have to download a lot of demos to eval for similar reasons, so I know what's available and what to recommend. The line between my actual day job and my music side ...

Re: DP vs Nuendo

I'm very confused by this last statement. What do you mean by the "sound"? The final sound is that of the hardware D/A converters, not the software DAW in the digital domain (which our analogue ears cannot listen to). So are you referring to the quality of plug-in effects, the quality of t...

Re: Hard Drive Preference: Lacie or Maxtor?

There's a lot of confusion in this discussion over what constitutes a hard drive. Most of the discussion fails to distinguish between a hard drive and the enclosure. For instance, LaCie uses Western Digital but used to use Maxtor (or is it the other way around?). They do NOT make hard drives; they m...

Re: DP vs Nuendo

Are you guys talking about the old Nuendo or the new Nuendo, which is almost a complete redesign and which I am told never has more than one menu deep? I haven't had enough spare time to work with DP for almost a year now (other than for MIDI, which doesn't count). So I wouldn't want to put myself o...

Re: MX4 at Guitar Center - $100

And here I was congratulating myself last week for getting mine for $250. They have eight copies in San Francisco but all the other Bay Area stores are sold out. My copy of Version Two is unwrapped but not installed yet. Even if still wrapped, I would consider it unethical to return it just to get t...

Re: Symphonic Instruments versus EWQLSO

I was mistaken; Sibelius uses Sonic Implants, as that is what Kontakt Player generally ships with for its orchestral sounds. I got confused by the "Gold" name. I would never want a sample library to be my final recording; just good enough to get me attention so that hopefully a real orches...

Re: MOTU Symphonic Instrument

Mine arrived last Wednesday, but I'm in a similar boat. Mostly, it took five days for Epson to get back to me about a printer problem, and it took me five hours last night to get my printer working again. In the meantime, my computer desktop has become so cluttered with placeholder icons for documen...

Re: Symphonic Instruments versus EWQLSO

Is EWQLSO what ships with Sibelius? That was my impression. I was so horrified at the quality of both the basic and the enhanced editions of the sound sets for Sibelius that I got steered away from EastWest stuff. The historic instruments helped put SI over the top for me. GPO is pretty good for the...

Re: Interesting... Mac OX for Intel hacked to run on PCs...

As much as I have disliked Intel architecture for twenty-five years (longer than I have disliked Microsoft :-)), I see this as great news, because anything that helps push the entire industry towards compatibility, interoperability, and open platforms, benefits us all. It means less time reinventing...

Is there an "ideal" format for importing into

Since Mach Five is new, there are few if any sample libraries sold in that format. Regardless of whether Mach Five itself or Chickensys is used to do the translation, is there a particular format that is recommended as the ideal import format for Mach Five? I only have a few sample libraries at mome...
